The American Today: USF and UCF Split Doubleheader, Tulsa Clinches Second Seed at Championship

With one out in the first inning, UCF took a 1-0 lead when Linnea Goodman beat the throw home on Jessica Ujvari’s fielder’s choice. USF responded in the top of the second by tying the score 1-1 as Veronica Gajownik’s RBI single to right field plated Monica Santos, who doubled to get on base. Neither team scored again until the Knights’ Kalyn Cenal broke the tie with a solo homerun in the bottom of the sixth, giving UCF a 2-1 advantage. The Knights secured the win and recorded their 10th straight victory in the process.

In game two, USF’s Juli Weber stole home in the third inning to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead. In the fourth inning freshman Mia Fung hit a solo homerun which gave the Knights a 2-0 advantage. A pair of runs by UCF in the sixth inning tied the game 2-2. Ujvari’s RBI double drove in Brittany Solis, and Samantha McCloskey plated pinch runner Kirsten Foster with a sacrifice fly. With two outs in the top of the seventh, Santos hit an RBI double which scored D’Anna Devine, who reached on an error, to give the Bulls a 3-2 lead. UCF was unable to catch up in the bottom of the inning, and USF secured the victory as the Knights suffered just their second conference loss this season. The win is the Bulls' first over a ranked opponent since defeating No. 20 Louisiana in February of last season. USF (35-18, 6-9 American) and UCF (45-7, 15-2 American) will conclude their regular season on Sunday at the UCF Softball Complex, with their series finale set to begin at Noon ET.

The lone run of the opening game was scored in the bottom of the first inning, with one out and the bases loaded. Memphis freshman Katie Brignac hit a groundball to third which resulted in an error and Kyler Trosclair was able to score. Trosclair had two of the Tigers’ three hits in the game. Neither team scored the remainder of the game and Memphis finished with a 1-0 game one win over Houston. Tigers pitcher Jordan Richwood earned the win, striking out seven batters while allowing two hits and one walk.  Houston’s Julana Shrum struck out three, while allowing one run on three hits in the circle.

Memphis scored a pair of runs in the second inning of game two when Haleigh Ross hit a two-run single with two outs, plating Brignac and Sami Jo Schulz. Trailing 2-0 heading into the sixth inning, Houston cut the Tigers’ lead to one (2-1) when Kaylin Crumpton singled to score Katie St. Pierre, who reached base on a throwing error. The Cougars tied the game 2-2 in the top of the seventh. Shrum hit a leadoff double and pinch runner Courtney Mica advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored when the ball slipped out of Brignac’s grasp on the mound. Memphis responded by adding another run in the bottom of the inning, with an RBI single to left field by Ross. The Tigers (19-32 overall, 6-11 American) secured a 3-2 win over Houston (26-26 overall, 9-7 American), with Ross going 2-for-2 at the plate and tallying all three RBIs. The teams will resume play on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT in Memphis, Tenn.

In the opener, UConn scored first when Alyson Ambler crossed the plate on a base hit by Jacklyn Dubois, giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead. Tulsa tied the score 1-1 in the top of the third inning when Erica Sampson reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on a triple through the right side by Catherine Horner. In the bottom of the fourth UConn had a 2-1 advantage when Ambler hit a solo homerun, but Tulsa scored a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead 3-2. Horner’s RBI single plated Jodi Edmiston, while Julie Kernen’s sacrifice fly allowed Sampson to score. The Hurricane added two more runs in the top of the seventh due to RBI base hits by Horner and Kernen. Tulsa recorded 12 hits in the game one win, with Horner going 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs. Taylor Townsend and Dubois each had two hits for the Huskies.

Tulsa scored four runs in the first inning to take an early lead in game two. Sampson crossed the plate on a double through the right side by Horner, who scored on an illegal pitch. Shelby Estocado’s base hit up the middle plated Kernen, who reached base on a walk. Walker, who also drew a walk to get on base, scored on a double steal to give the Hurricane a 4-0 advantage. In the third inning Tulsa added a pair of runs when Kernen and Walker scored on Maddie Withee’s triple to center field. Withee scored on an RBI groundout by Estocado, and the Hurricane took a 7-0 lead. In the fourth inning Horner extended Tulsa’s lead to 8-0 when she scored on an RBI double by Withee. The game concluded after five innings as the Hurricane held UConn scoreless. Tulsa tallied 11 hits in the game, while UConn had five. With the pair of wins the Hurricane improved to 33-17 overall and 11-6 in conference play while the Huskies fell to 18-33 overall and 4-12 in The American. Tulsa clinched the No. 2 seed in the upcoming American Athletic Conference Championship with the pair of wins. The final game of the series will be held on Sunday at Noon ET at Burrill Family Field in Storrs, Conn.
