ORLANDO - No. 3 seed Houston prevailed in a pitcher's duel to defeat sixth-seeded Memphis, 1-0, in the quarterfinals of the American Softball Championship Thursday afternoon at UCF Softball Complex. The Cougars advance to the semifinals to face the winner of No. 2 seed Tulsa and seventh-seeded UConn on Friday at 3 p.m. Eastern.
Julana Shrum got the win for Houston and pitched a complete game three-hitter with one walk. Memphis' Jordan Richwood gave up three hits in the loss in six innings of action.
Shelby Miller went 1-for-3 and plated the game-winning run for the Cougars (28-26), while Sydney Gerbracht and Courtney Klingler each added one hit apiece. Haleigh Ross had a 2-for-2 outing for the Tigers, who fell to 19-34 with the loss.
