PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference announced its annual men's golf awards on Friday to cap the 2014-15 season.
SMU junior Bryson Dechambeau was named American Men's Golf Player of the Year while USF's Claudio Correa was the unanimous choice for American Men's Golf Freshman of the Year. First year Bulls head coach Steve Bradley was tabbed as the American Men's Golf Coach of the Year.
Dechambeau led the league with a 70.71 average this season and set an American Athletic Conference Championship record after carding an 8-under-64 in the final round of play on April 27. The junior was the runner-up at the event after climbing nine spots in the rankings on the final day. Dechambeau tallied three top-five finishes this season and was named to the 2015 Ben Hogan Award Watch List in March. He was one of six juniors on the watch list for the award, which is considered the most prestigious honor in men’s college golf.
Correa has three top-20 finishes this season, a pair of top-two marks, and has the lowest average among league freshmen with a 72.07. The rookie was the top medalist at the SunTrust Gator Invitational and captured his first individual title as a Bull during the season opening meet. He won the event, shot a career-low 65 in the process and made a hole-in-one during first round action.
Bradley led USF to the American Men's Golf Championship title last month. The Bulls shot 837 (282-275-280) over the two-day event and led wire-to-wire en route to the championship while taking home individual medalist honors as well. USF won four tournaments this season, are ranked 13
th in the nation in the latest GolfStat rankings and earned the league's automatic bid to NCAA Regionals
.
The all-conference team spans student-athletes from seven schools and is highlighted by five players from USF. UCF, Houston and SMU had two players each named to the all-conference team.
The awards were voted on by the league's 10 head coaches.
