BRADENTON, Fla. -- SMU's Bryson DeChambeau, the 2015 American Athletic Conference Player of the Year, shot a one-over-par 71 Monday to finish at eight under for the tournament and win the individual title at the NCAA Men's Golf Championship at the Concession Golf Club.
DeChambeau becomes the first SMU player to win an NCAA individual title in men's golf. He is the second American Athletic Conference athlete to win an NCAA title in any sport, joining Louisville's Joao De Lucca, who won two national championships in swimming in 2014.
"I'm very appreciative and honored to win the title," DeChambeau told Golf Channel after celebrating with his teammates. "I knew I could do it coming into this week if my game was good enough, and I did it."
DeChambeau, who took the individual lead after he shot a five-under 67 in Saturday's second round, shot 280 for the tournament (70-67-72-71). Washington's Cheng-Tsung Pan nearly holed a bunker shot on the 18th that would forced a playoff for the title, but Pan's birdie bid rolled just wide.
USF's Claudio Correa, the American Freshman of the Year, was in the hunt for the national title as well. Correa finished sixth in the individual standings (68-75-69-72--284), but helped the Bulls advance to the match play round of the NCAA Championship as USF took sixth in stroke play.
The top eight teams in stroke play move on to the match play portion of the tournament for the team title. USF made the cut by finishing with a four-round total of 1,168 (294-291-292-291).
DeChambeau's efforts were not enough to send SMU to the match play portion as the Mustangs finished 14th (296-303-291-302-1,192).
