MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Cincinnati outfielder Ian Happ and Memphis right-handed pitcher Nolan Blackwood were named to the 2015 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division I All-America Teams, as both players were selected to the second team per the NCBWA’s announcement Wednesday.
Happ - The American Player of the Year in 2015 - led The American in a multitude of offensive categories in 2015, hitting .369 with a .492 on-base percentage and .672 slugging percentage while walking 49 times (all conference bests) for a Bearcat team with the most freshmen in the nation. The junior from Pittsburgh hit 14 home runs - good for third in the conference - while driving in 44 runs, scoring 47 and doubling 18 times. Happ was selected Monday as the ninth overall pick in the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Chicago Cubs.
Blackwood made 25 appearances out of the bullpen for the Tigers in 2015 and recorded a 0.52 ERA and 14 saves for a Memphis team that won 37 games. The sophomore from Southaven, Mississippi, allowed just two earned runs in 34.2 innings of work and did not surrender a home run. Blackwood pitched six innings of shutout relief to earn the win in Memphis’ 15-inning victory at UConn April 26.
