PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Commissioner Mike Aresco has announced the 21 teams that have been recognized with 2014-15 Team Academic Excellence Awards for having the highest collective grade-point averages in each conference sport.
The selections are made by the conference’s Academic Affairs Committee. The winners were chosen based on the 2014-15 grade-point average of each student-athlete who appeared on an institution’s roster as of the last contest of the championship segment in each conference-sponsored sport.
The list of honored teams includes UConn’s women’s basketball team, which went 38-1 and won its third straight NCAA championship in 2014-15. UConn women’s basketball was one of five American Athletic Conference championship teams to be recognized.
UCF had three teams earn Team Excellence Awards, including two conference championship teams. The Knights’ football team, which claimed a share of The American title on a Hail Mary pass in its final regular-season game of the year, joined the softball team, which won The American’s regular-season and tournament titles.
USF’s men’s tennis championship team, which won The American title and reached the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament, also was honored with a Team Excellence Award.
Memphis had five of its teams earn the honor to lead all institutions. UCF had three teams chosen.
