PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly men’s soccer honors for the week ending Sunday, Aug. 30.
Offensive Player of the Week
Matias Pyysalo * So. * M * UCF
Pyysalo tallied six points – two goals and two assists – in UCF’s 5-0 win over Florida Atlantic Friday night at UCF Soccer Stadium. It was the most points by a UCF player since Deshorn Brown in 2012. The sophomore scored the second and third goals of the game to put the game out of reach early in the second half.
Defensive Player of the Week
Neico Regent * So. * B * UCF
Regent aided the Knights to a shutout win over Florida Atlantic as a member of the back line and scored the season opening goal for UCF in the 11
th minute.
Goalkeeper of the Week
Alex Cagle * So. * Temple
Cagle led the Owls in the net through 216 minutes of action across two matches. The sophomore made five saves over the weekend and recorded his first career win in a 1-0 victory at Manhattan. Cagle stopped three shots vs. the Jaspers and made two saves in a 1-1 double overtime draw against Northeastern.
Rookie of the Week
Gorka Aperribay * Fr. * F * UCF
Aperribay registered a goal and an assist in his UCF debut over the weekend. The rookie assisted on the third goal of the game and added an insurance goal in the 73
rd minute. Aperribay totaled three shots in the decision, two of which were on goal.
