Three UCF Players Earn Women’s Soccer Weekly Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Four American Athletic Conference Players were honored with Player of the Week accolades for the second week of the 2015 women's soccer season. Three UCF players have garnered awards this week as senior Ashley Spivey has earned Offensive Player of the Week, sophomore Saga Fredriksson has been named the Defensive Player of the Week, and freshman Jessica Taylor has been nominated as the Rookie of the Week. From Cincinnati, senior Natalie Smith has been chosen as the Goalkeeper of the Week.

Spivey netted two game-winners this weekend to help extend UCF’s winning streak to three straight matches. She scored on her only attempt in Friday’s match against FIU, leading the Knights to their 1-0 defeat of the Panthers. On Sunday UCF beat Miami (Fla.) 4-3, as Spivey registered the game-winner in double overtime.

Defender Fredriksson played all 90 minutes of UCF’s shutout at FIU on Friday. She also assisted the Knights’ first goal against Miami on Sunday, with her free kick in the 10th minute. Fredriksson helped deliver UCF’s first win at Miami in more than a decade.

Smith, Cincinnati’s senior goalkeeper, recorded five saves in Sunday’s shutout win over Providence. She had a diving save in the 49th minute, and also made a pair of diving saves in the 64th minute on back-to-back one-on-one opportunities for the Friars. Smith lifted the Bearcats to their third consecutive shutout.

Taylor scored her first career goal on her only shot of UCF’s match against Miami on Sunday. The freshman scored the Knights’ third goal in the 26th minute. Taylor helped increase UCF’s unbeaten streak to six straight in the series with the Hurricanes.
