PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly men’s soccer honors for the week ending Sept. 13.
Offensive Player of the Week
Jorge Gomez Sanchez * Jr. * M * Temple
Gomez Sanchez scored nine points in a 2-0 week for Temple. The junior averaged 4.50 points per game and scored both goals in a 2-0 shutout against Yale on Sunday. He opened up the week by logging two goals and an assist in a 3-1 comeback win over Rider on Sept. 8.
Defensive Player of the Week
Brendan Hines-Ike * Sr. * B * USF
Hines-Ike scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in USF’s 2-1 win over Georgia Southern on Sunday. It was his second career goal and first with the Bulls. The senior was a key member of the USF backline and helped limit the Eagles to five total shots in the matchup.
Goalkeeper of the Week
Alex Cagle * R-So. * Temple
Cagle recorded two wins and a shutout last week as Temple improved to 4-0-1 on the year. The redshirt sophomore allowed just one goal in 180 minutes of action and made six saves across two matches. He stopped five shots in a 3-1 win over Rider and made one save in a 2-0 shutout of Yale.
Rookie of the Week
Abdou Thiam * Fr. * F * UConn
Thiam scored his first two career goals in a span of 2:19 to give UConn a 2-1 come-from-behind win over RV/22 UC Santa Barbara on Sunday. The freshman scored both goals late in the game, in the 83
rd and 85
th minutes, with the Huskies trailing 1-0.
