Week Five Men's Soccer Honors Announced



PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly men’s soccer honors for the week ending Sept. 27.
 
Offensive Player of the Week
Alejandro Garcia * Sr. * F * Cincinnati
Garcia scored the game-winning goal in the 85th minute in Cincinnati’s 3-2 victory over No. 17/24 Temple Saturday evening at Gettler Stadium. It was the Bearcats’ first victory over a ranked opponent since defeating No. 6 Louisville in 2013.The senior scored two of the three Cincinnati goals in the win and finished with four points last week.
 
Defensive Player of the Week
Jared Rice * So. * B * SMU
Rice added his team-high fifth assist of the season in SMU’s 1-0 shutout win at Tulsa Saturday evening. The sophomore assisted on Brenden Lee’s game-winning goal in the sixth minute. Rice is tied for first in the league in total assists with Saturday’s result.   
 
Goalkeeper of the Week
Spasoje Stefanovic * Jr. * USF
Stefanovic repeats as American Goalkeeper of the Week after recording three saves and a shutout in Saturday’s 1-0 win over RV/18 UConn. RV/NR USF improved to 6-2-0 (1-0-0 American) and posted their third shutout at home with the victory.
 
Rookie of the Week
Mason Morise * Fr. * M * Memphis
Morise had a hand in both of Memphis’ goals in a 2-2 draw vs. UCF Saturday evening at Mike Rose Stadium. The Knights led 2-0 early in the second half before the Tigers scored twice in the 61st and 66th minutes, respectively, to tie things up at 2-2.

Scored the game-winning goal in 1-0 shutout victory over RV/18 UConn Saturday evening at Corbett Stadium

Had the game-winning goal for SMU in 1-0 win at Tulsa, finished with three shots on goal
 
Jorge Gomez Sanchez * Jr. * M * Temple
Finished with three points in a 1-1 week for Temple, had a goal and an assist in conference opener at Cincinnati
 
Matt Mahoney * Jr. * B * Temple
Logged first goal of the season vs. Cincinnati, played 90 minutes in each of Temple’s games last week
 
Belal Mohamed * Fr. * M * Temple
Scored first career goal in Temple’s 4-1 win over La Salle on Wednesday
