SMU's Matt Davis

American Profiles will give you a personal look at some of your favorite players throughout the year

Last season junior quarterback Matt Davis played in 10 games and started the final five for the Mustangs, totaling 855 passing yards and 613 rushing yards. Davis will get the start tonight as a new era of SMU football begins.  In 2014 Davis set school records for the two highest rushing totals by a quarterback in SMU history, after running for 191 yards against UConn and 181 yards earlier in the season against Tulsa.

A four-star recruit by ESPN.com, Rivals.com, 247sports.com and Scout.com out of high school, Davis spent a redshirt year at Texas A&M before transferring to Tyler Junior College. At Tyler, Davis appeared in seven games and was named the Southwest Junior College Football Conference and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Offensive Player of the Week after orchestrasting a come-from-behind win over Blinn. Davis has finally found a home at SMU under Coach Morris and is ready to get the season started. "Our saying is, best is the standard. Whatever your best is that is what you are required to give every day and in every aspect of the class room especially on the field all these different types of things, that is the standard he sets."

Davis and Coach Morris have a connection that stems back to Davis' high school days when Morris was recruiting him to play at Clemson. It's taken some time but Davis is excited to finally be playing for the guy he met years ago; "Coach Morris is a cool dude, he has so much swagger. He recruited me in high school and so I had a good feeling." Davis and Morris kick off the season tonight at 6pm CT against Baylor.
