American Profiles: Temple Quarterback Phillip Walker

Before he engineered what is being talked about in Philadelphia simply as, "The Drive," Phillip Walker was already a household name in the City of Brotherly Love.

Well, sort of.

Walker, who has Temple primed for a battle for first place in the East Division with USF Friday, was better-known as P.J. Walker during his first three years with the Owls. He arrived at Temple as a prized recruit after he was named as New Jersey's Offensive Player of the Year as a senior in high school. And it didn't take long - namely, his second appearance as a freshman - to show that he would become a fixture at the helm of Temple's offense. He came off the bench to throw for 182 yards in the second half against No. 7 Louisville and picked up his first career win as a starter two games later.

Walker started every game in 2014 and threw for 2,317 yards and 13 touchdowns, but broke through in a big way as a junior in 2015. He threw for 2,972 yards and 19 TDs with eight interceptions, helping the Owls to The American's East Division title and a spot in the Boca Raton Bowl.

Primed for a standout senior year, and armed with greater notoriety, Walker had one request to ask of the Temple athletics department. He wanted to be known by his full name - and make Phillip Walker the name that is etched in the Owls’ career annals.

"It is just the growth, the older I get the less I want to be called P.J.," Walker told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "I feel the more mature I become and the more of a man I become, I don't want to be a grown man being called P.J. I would prefer them calling me by my original name."
