Pairing for the 2016 American Women's Soccer Championship Announced




PROVIDENCE, R.I. – UConn earned the 2016 American Athletic Conference women’s soccer regular-season title and clinched the No. 1 seed in the American Women's Soccer Championship, the league announced on Sunday. Memphis will be seeded No. 2 while SMU and USF claimed the third and fourth seeds, respectively. 

The first round of the championship  will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 2 with the top two seeds receiving a bye. The semifinals and title match will be held Nov. 4 and 6. All matches will be played at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn. Six of league's teams will compete for the championship title and the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
 
Tournament seeding is based on points accumulated through league play.
 
No. 1 UConn (16-2-1, 8-0-1 American) defeated East Carolina, 2-1, in its final matchup on Sunday. The Huskies open tournament play next Friday, Nov. 4 facing the winner of the match between USF and Cincinnati on Friday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT. 
 
No. 2 Memphis (14-3-1, 8-1-0 American) will face the winner of the match between SMU and UCF on Friday, Nov. 4 at 4:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. CT. The Tigers defeated UCF in a double overtime thriller to conclude the regular season.
 
No. 3 SMU (12-5-1, 6-2-1 American) defeated Houston 3-1 to clinch the third seed in the conference tournament. The Mustangs face sixth-seeded UCF on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 4:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. CT.
 
No. 4 USF (12-3-2, 4-3-2 American) topped Tulsa in its final game of the season, 3-2, and will face No. 5 Cincinnati in the championship first round at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT on Wednesday.
 
No. 5 Cincinnati (11-5-3, 4-3-2 American) clinched the fifth spot in the conference championship with a 2-1 win over Temple. The Bearcats open tournament play on Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT at fourth-seeded USF.
 
No. 6 UCF (9-8-1, 4-4-1 American) will face No. 3 SMU in the championship first round on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. CT. The Knights fell to Memphis, 1-0, in double overtime in their final game of the regular season.
