The top four teams in The American’s West Division have a combined overall record of 17-4. Only the Big Ten East (19-3), ACC Atlantic (19-3) and SEC West (19-4) have better cumulative marks for their top four teams.
Navy took early control of the West Division race as the Midshipmen earned a 46-40 win against No. 6/5 Houston at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The Midshipmen (4-1, 3-0 American) scored their 13th straight victory at home and improved to 10-1 all-time in American Athletic Conference games.
QB Will Worth had a hand in three touchdowns as he rushed for a game-high 115 yards and a score and threw two TD passes among his three completions. The Midshipmen took advantage of three Houston turnovers, scoring 17 points off of takeaways, including a 34-yard interception return by LB Josiah Powell.
For Navy, the win was the first against a top-10 team since a 1984 victory against No. 2 South Carolina. Houston, which saw QB Greg Ward Jr. account for 453 yards of total offense, saw an eight-game winning streak come to an end.
Memphis and Tulsa were the last two teams to begin American Athletic Conference play, and both came away with wins in their respective league openers.
Memphis scored on offense, defense and special teams in a 34-27 victory against Temple as WR Tony Pollard had a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and LB Genard Avery scored on a 23-yard interception return. Memphis improved to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in The American.
Tulsa won in overtime for the second straight game as QB Dane Evans’ 14-yard touchdown run gave the Golden Hurricane a 43-40 decision against SMU. Evans threw for 247 yards and a TD while Tulsa had two 100-yard rushers and two 100-yard receivers to improve to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in The American.
In the East Division, USF put itself atop the standings with a 38-22 win against East Carolina as QB Quinton Flowers threw for 250 yards and three touchdowns and had 115 rushing yards. RB Marlon Mack added 152 yards and two TDs on 18 carries, while RB D’Ernest Johnson had two touchdown receptions.
UConn earned its first conference win as the Huskies scored the last 20 points of a 20-9 win against Cincinnati at Pratt & Whitney Stadium. WR Noel Thomas led the way with nine catches for 108 yards and a touchdown, while QB Bryant Shirreffs threw two touchdown passes..
