Caupain, Lawson Named to Naismith Trophy Watch List

ATLANTA – Cincinnati senior guard Troy Caupain and Memphis sophomore forward Dedric Lawson were among the 50 nominees to the Naismith Trophy Watch List, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced.

Caupain and Lawson were named the American Athletic Conference Preseason Co-Players of the Year in October.

Caupain averaged 13.0 points and 4.8 assists while ranking among The American’s leaders in six categories in 2015-16. His 4.8 assists were the most at UC since 2002-03 (Taron Baker at 5.0). Caupain also earned selection to the American Championship All-Tournament team after scoring a career-high 37 points to go with 10 rebounds and zero turnovers in 56 minutes of play in the four-overtime quarterfinal thriller with UConn on March 11, 2016.

Lawson was named the unanimous 2015-16 American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year after averaging 15.8 points per game and leading the conference with a 9.3 rebound per game average. He was named to the Kyle Macy Freshman All-America Team, and Second Team All-District by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). His 17 double-doubles last season set an American Athletic Conference record, tied a Memphis freshman record with Keith Lee and was 19th best in all of NCAA Division I. Lawson's 307 rebounds last season are the third-most by a freshman in program history, and his 9.3 rebound per game average ranks fourth in school history for a freshman. Lawson was the only freshman in the country last season with at least 500 points, 300 rebounds, 60 assists, 50 blocked shots, and 20 three-pointers made.

Cincinnati will tip its season on Friday, Nov. 11, hosting Brown at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN3. Memphis, in Tubby Smith’s first season at the helm, will host the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on Monday, November 14, at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN3.

The midseason list of 30 will be announced on Feb. 9, 2017.
