PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The 2016 American Athletic Conference Football Championship will be televised nationally on ABC. The Championship will be played Saturday, Dec. 3, at noon ET at the home site of one of the conference’s divisional winners.
This year will mark the second consecutive season in which The American Football Championship is televised on ABC. Last year’s matchup between Houston and Temple drew a national television audience of 2.45 million viewers.
Six teams are still alive in the races for divisional titles. Navy, which is 5-1 in The American, would clinch the West Division title with one win in its final two games (Nov. 19 at East Carolina; Nov. 26 at SMU). Houston would win the West if the Cougars beat Memphis Nov. 25, and Navy drops its two remaining games, while Tulsa would take the West Division if the Golden Hurricane wins its two upcoming games (Nov. 19 at UCF; Nov. 25 vs. Cincinnati) and Navy and Houston both lose their remaining league games.
Temple and USF are tied for first place in the East Division at 5-1 in conference play, though the Owls hold the head-to-head tiebreaker based on a 46-30 win against the Bulls Oct. 21. Temple would secure the divisional title with a pair of wins (Nov. 19 at Tulane; Nov. 26 vs. East Carolina). USF and UCF are both in contention in the East with two weeks remaining in the regular season.
The site of the American Athletic Conference Football Championship will be the home stadium of the divisional champion with the better winning percentage in conference games. If the divisional champions have the same conference record, then the
conference’s tiebreaking procedure will be used.
