Women’s Soccer: Huskies Shutout USF, Earn Conference Championship Berth



STORRS, Conn. –  No. 1 UConn defeated No. 4 USF, 2-0, on Friday to advance to the American Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championship match. Rachel Hill and Stephanie Ribeiro each netted a goal for the Huskies.
 
Hill put the Huskies ahead in the 38th minute as she place the ball just past USF goalkeeper Kat Elliott to put the Huskies up 1-0. Hill’s goal was her 14th of the season.

 
In the 50th minute, Ribeiro netted a goal to put the Huskies up 2-0. She hit a low shot past the keeper to notch her 20th goal of the season.
 
UConn outshot the Bulls, 15-10, in the match. Ribeiro led all players with six shots. Hill followed closely behind with five shots. Emily Armstrong recorded her 10th shutout of the season as she made three saves in the match.
 
Despite the loss, Elliott made seven save, just one shy of her career high. Leticia Skeete and Evelyne Viens had three shots and one shot on goal each in the loss.
 
No. 1 UConn will face No. 3 SMU in the conference championship on Sunday at 2 p.m. This is the second conference championship appearance for the Huskies. In 2014, UConn tied USF 0-0 and won the championship 3-2 on penalty kicks. Live coverage of the match will air on ESPNU.
