USF’ Fernandes Named American Men’s Golf Player of the Week



PROVIDENCE, R.I. – USF junior Rigel Fernandes was named the American Men's Golf Player of the Week on Wednesday after a record setting week at the SunTrust Gator Invitational.
 
Fernandes shot a school record 63 in the second round of the Gator Invitational and finished with a program record 13-under 197 (70-63-64). The performance helped the junior win the individual title by four shots. He tied for the tournament lead with 17 birdies and made par or better on his final 39 holes. As a team, USF won the event and broke the program's 18-hole record with a 13-under 267 in the final round and finished 22-under (818: 282-269-267), eight shots ahead of No. 19 Vanderbilt and nine ahead of No. 12 Florida.

    • Manual Elvira led the way for UCF at the SunTrust Gator Invitational on Feb. 20-21 at the Mark Bostic Golf Course…The Knights finished tied for 10th in the team standings.
    • UCF returns to action on Feb. 26 competing at The Hayt in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
 
  • Houston
    • The Cougars played twice last week and won the President’s Day Challenge on Feb. 15…Sophomore Papito Gonzalez won the event, the first of his collegiate career, by one stroke.
    • Houston next competes at the Querencia Cabo Intercollegiate on Feb. 28-Mar. 1.
 
  • USF
    • USF defended its SunTrust Gator Invitational title with an eight-stroke win on Feb. 21…The Bulls set a new school 54-hole record in the process, besting their previous mark of 826 (-14) set at the 2015 NCAA New Haven Regional.
    • USF is back in action this weekend at the Querencia Cabo Intercollegiate in Los Cabos, Mexico.  
 
  • SMU
    • Senior Ryan Burgess led the Mustangs to a win at The Farms Collegiate Invitational on Feb. 8-9…Burgess was the top individual medalist at the event and carded a 7-under 209 (70-71-68).
    • SMU returns to the links on March 7 at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Master hosted by UNLV.
 
  • Tulsa
    • The Hurricane placed 14th at the UTSA Oak Hills Invitational during their last time out on Feb. 9…Redshirt freshman Sam Humphreys was the top individual finisher for Tulsa.
    • Tulsa will be in action next at The Hayt on Feb. 26-28.
