USF's Montes, Houston's Romero Earn Weekly Baseball Honors



PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly baseball honors for the week-ending March 20.

Coco Montes • Fr. • SS • USF • Miami, Fla.
Montes led USF to a 3-2 week, which included a series win against No. 25 Michigan State — the Bulls’ first series victory against a ranked opponent since the 2013 season. In addition to playing error-free ball at shortstop, Montes hit .400 (6-for-15) with a double, a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs in the Bulls’ five games, including a 5-for-7 clip in the series with the Spartans. He keyed the Bulls’ series-clinching win in Game 3 against Michigan State by going 2-for-2 with a home run and two runs scored.

AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Seth Romero • So. • LHP • Houston • West Columbia, Texas
Romero dominated in his start against Grand Canyon, helping the Cougars to a sweep of the three-game series. Romero allowed one hit and one unearned run in a complete-game victory, finishing with two walks and 13 strikeouts — the most by an American Athletic Conference pitcher in a game this season. He did not allow a baserunner after the fourth inning, allowing Houston to take a 3-1 victory. Romero has a 3-0 record and a 0.78 earned-run average in 23.0 innings this season.

Brandon Lawson • Jr. • RHP • USF • Brooksville, Fla.
Struck out eight and scattered five hits in 7.1 innings to get the win in a 2-0 victory against No. 25 Michigan State.
 
Ross Massey • Fr. • LHP • Tulane • Baton Rouge, La.
Struck out eight and allowed one run in two appearances, including a seven-strikeout effort in 7.0 innings to get the decision in a 3-2 win at Texas.
