Four Teams Claim First 2016 Weekly Outdoor Track and Field Honors

The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s first weekly outdoor track and field honors of the 2016 season, for the week ending March 20.
 
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE MALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Mario Burke • Fr. • Houston • Bridgetown, Barbados
Burke has been selected as the Male Track Athlete of the Week after earning a pair of first-place finishes and a second-place finish at the UTSA Invitational this weekend. The freshman ran the 100-meter dash in 10.34 to take first in the event. The time also ranks first in The American and No. 5 in the NCAA this season. Burke ran the second leg of Houston’s 4x100-meter relay team that took first at the meet with a time of 39.86. The Cougars’ (A) relay squad currently holds the fourth-best time in the nation. In addition, the 4x400-meter relay team took second at the meet with a time of 3:13.00. Burke ran the final leg of the relay for a team that ranks No. 20 in the NCAA in the event this year. As a team, Houston took third place out of a field of seven teams at the meet, with an overall score of 120 points.
 
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE FEMALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Rosie Chamberlain • So. • UCF • Exeter, England
Chamberlain has earned Female Track Athlete of the Week honors after she took first place and broke the UCF and facility records in the 800-meter run at the UCF Black and Gold Challenge. The sophomore finished with a time of 2:04.54, which is the top time in the conference and the second-fastest time in the NCAA this season. Chamberlain’s time is the fastest of her career in the 800, in either indoor or outdoor competition.
 
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE MALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Devin Screen • Sr. • USF • Tallahassee, Fla.
Screen has been named the Male Field Athlete of the Week after his performance at the Bulls Invitational. With a toss of 15.53 meters, the senior claimed first place in the shot put. At the meet he also earned second in the discus throw, with a conference-best mark of 55.21 meters. Screen’s discus throw ranks No. 13 in the NCAA this year, and was the second-best in school history. In addition to this week’s results, Screen broke the school-record in the hammer throw by over five feet at the USF Invitational last week. His mark of 58.74 meters in the hammer throw is presently No. 44 in the country.
 
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE FEMALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Kayla Padgett • Sr. • East Carolina • Shallotte, N.C.
Padgett is the Female Field Athlete of the Week after winning the hammer throw event at the Dennis Craddock Carolina Relays, held at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, N.C. Her mark of 61.47 meters is currently first in the American Athletic Conference and No. 7 nationally.  At the meet the senior also placed fourth in the discus and seventh in the shot put. Padgett’s mark of 42.62 meters in the discus ranks No. 7 in the conference this season.
