Spang Named American Women’s Golf Player of the Week



PROVIDENCE, R.I. – East Carolina senior Frida Gustafsson Spang was tabbed the American Women's Golf Player of the Week, the conference announced on Wednesday. Spang earned medalist honors for the second consecutive week after winning the Briar’s Creek Invitational.
 
Spang captured her sixth career title with an 8-under 208 at the Briar’s Creek Invitational Mar. 21-22 in Johns Island, South Carolina. The win set a new school record for career individual titles (six). Spang also set a new ECU single-season record for wins with three. The senior, who was tied for third entering final round play on Tuesday, is now ranked eighth nationally in the GolfStat standings.

    • Cincinnati posted a 10th place finish during play at the Morehead State Citrus Challenge Mar. 20-22 in Sorrento, Florida…Stefanie Mitchell was the Bearcats’ tournament leader and tied for 13th overall.
    • Cincinnati next hosts the 2016 Bearcats Classic on Mar. 25-27 in Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla.
       
  • East Carolina
    • Frida Gustafsson Spang posted six birdies and 10 pars during final round action at the Briar’s Creek Invitational in Johns Island, South Carolina…The Pirates took fourth with a score of 871.
    • East Carolina is back in action on Apr. 1 at the Bryan National Collegiate in Greensboro, N.C.
       
  • Houston
    • Houston finished seventh at the LSU Tiger Classic on Mar. 20-22…The Cougars were led by Raegan Bremer, who posted a Top-15 finish with a 228.
    • Houston will compete in the HBU Husky Invitational on Mar. 28-29 in Sugar Land, Texas.
 
  • Memphis
    • Memphis won its match play contest against Delaware in the San Diego State March Mayhem Tournament…Ashleigh Whisenant and Emily Goldenstein each won their respective matches 2-1.
    • Memphis travels to Oxford, Miss. for the Rebel Intercollegiate on Apr. 1-3.
 
  • Tulane
    • Senior Madison Opfer posted a runner-up finish with a 6-over 222 at the LSU Tiger Classic on Mar. 20-22…It was the highest finish of her career…The Green Wave finished third overall, ahead of a pair of Top-25 teams.
    • Tulane returns to the links on Apr. 1-2 at the DAC/SMU Invitational in Dallas.
