Tulsa's Defense Carries Hurricane Into Quarterfinals

UNCASVILLE, Conn.
–  Tulsa’s senior tandem of Kelsee Grovey and Ashley Clark combined for 33 points and 18 rebounds as the Golden Hurricane was a 76-38 winner against Houston in the first round of the American Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Championship Friday night at Mohegan Sun Arena.
 
Tulsa (12-18), the No. 6 seed in the bracket advances to face No. 3-seeded Temple in the quarterfinals Saturday at 8 p.m. ET (ESPN3).

 

Grovey scored 16 points with seven rebounds, while Clark had 16 points and 11 boards and four assists for Tulsa. The Golden Hurricane had a 42-31 rebounding advantage and limited Houston to 26.5-percent shooting from the field. Tulsa held Houston without a field goal for the final 12:37 of the game and outscored the Cougars 25-3 in the fourth period.
 
Nine Tulsa players contributed to the Golden Hurricane’s scoring, as Erika Wakefield joined Grovey and Clark in double figures with 10 points.

Houston, the No. 11 seed, was led by freshman Serithia Hawkins, who scored nine points with 11 rebounds. The Cougars fell to 6-24 as their season came to an end.
