Houston's Wong, UCF's Howell Take Weekly Baseball Honors



PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly baseball honors for the week-ending March 6.

Wong helped Houston secure a series win against Baylor as part of a 2-2 week for the Cougars as he hit .412 (7-for-17) and slugged .824 with a double, two home runs, seven runs scored and three RBIs, batting from the leadoff spot. He hit safely and scored at least one run in all four games and stole two bases. Wong bettered his season batting average to .364 and is second in the American Athletic Conference with 13 runs scored.

Howell came out on top in a pitchers’ duel on the road against Rice as he helped the Knights to a 2-0 win in Game 2 of the three-game series. Howell worked 7.1 shutout innings and scattered four hits — all singles — with three strikeouts and one walk. He retired the side in order in five innings and allowed only two runners to advance as far as second base. Howell improved to 2-0 on the year and has not allowed a run in 19.0 innings of work.

Hit safely in all five games, batting .333 (6-for-18) with three doubles, five runs scored and two stolen bases. Went 1-for-3 with an RBI in a10-7 win against No. 18 Coastal Carolina.
 
Seth Romero • So. • LHP • Houston • West Columbia, Texas
Worked 8.0 shutout innings in two appearances, registering eight strikeouts and allowing three hits. Earned the win in an 11-2 victory against Baylor after allowing one hit with four Ks in 5.0 innings.
 
Luke Maglich • Sr. • OF • USF • Sarasota, Fla.
Hit .600 (6-for-10) with two doubles, three RBIs and six runs scored in four games. Was a combined 5-for-5 with four runs scored in two wins against Saint Joseph’s.
 
Corey Merrill • Jr. • RHP • Tulane • Lutcher, La.
Threw 8.0 shutout innings and scattered three hits with six strikeouts and two walks in an 11-0 win against Pepperdine.
 
Jake Rogers • Jr. • C • Tulane • Canyon, Texas
Hit .333 (4-for-12) with five RBIs and five runs scored in a 3-1 week, including a series sweep of Pepperdine.
