Tulsa's Varsity Eight Tabbed American Athletic Conference Boat of the Week



PROVIDENCE, R.I. –  Tulsa’s varsity eight has earned the fourth American Athletic Conference Boat of the Week honors of the 2016 season.
 
The Hurricane varsity eight took first place in the grand final at the Knecht Cup, held on Mercer Lake in West Windsor Township, N.J., from April 9-10. There were a total of 31 teams that competed in the women’s varsity eight race.
 
Tulsa advanced to the grand final after the crew took first place in the Sunday morning semifinal, with a time of 6:50.47.
 
In the afternoon, the Hurricane took first in the grand final in a field of six boats, crossing the finish line at 6:48.61. Tulsa topped second-place Boston College by nearly three seconds.
 
As a team, Tulsa competed in two grand finals and three petite finals on Sunday, with the second varsity eight finishing sixth overall.

AROUND THE AMERICAN
The American Athletic Conference will include seven teams for women’s rowing in the 2016 season: UCF, UConn, Sacramento State, San Diego State, SMU, Temple and Tulsa.

The third annual American Athletic Conference Rowing Championship will take place on May 14 at Sacramento State Aquatic Center in Gold River, Calif. The winner of the conference title will receive the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Championships, held at the same location, from May 27-29.

UCF returns to action on the East Coast at the two-day Clemson Invite in Clemson, S.C., starting Saturday, April 16.

UConn traveled to West Windsor Township, N.J., over the weekend for the two-day Knecht Cup. The Huskies’ second varsity eight placed fifth in Sunday’s grand final with a time of 6:57.96. The boat took second place in the semifinal race (7:10.02), to advance to the grand final. The varsity eight took sixth place in the third final on Sunday (7:07.82). UConn’s next competition will be on Sunday, April 17, against Boston College and Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass.

Sacramento State will race again on April 16-17, at the Lake Natoma Invitational in Gold River, Calif.

San Diego State is set to take on UC San Diego on Friday, April 15, and UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, April 16. Both races will be held on Mission Bay in San Diego, Calif.

SMU crews raced at the Knecht Cup in West Windsor Township, N.J., where the varsity eight finished with a time of 7:05.8 to place fourth in the third final on Sunday afternoon. The Mustangs raced against Fordham, Nova Southeastern, Delaware, Duquesne and UConn. SMU will be back on the water on Saturday, April 16, as they head to Catoosa, Okla., to compete against Tulsa for the Lawless Cup.

Temple competed in five finals at the Knecht Cup on Mercer Lake on Sunday, including a grand final appearance from the novice eight which finished sixth, clocking in at 7:18.29.  The varsity eight raced in a morning semifinal, taking third overall (6:56.95). The boat took fifth place in the petite final (6:53.16). Temple is back in action next weekend at the Kerr Cup, hosted by Drexel on the Schuylkill River.

Tulsa raced at the Knecht Cup on Mercer Lake over the weekend. The Hurricane’s varsity eight earned a gold medal, while the second varsity eight finished sixth overall. Tulsa returns to action next Saturday, April 16, as it hosts SMU in the annual Lawless Cup in Catoosa, Okla.
