American Women’s Golf Championship Set for This Weekend

CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference is gearing up for its Women’s Golf Championship at Hammock Beach Resort & Golf Club in Palm Coast, Fla. The three-day event, hosted by The American and UCF, will take place this Sunday through Tuesday, April 17-19.

Play on the 6,225-yard, par-72 Ocean Course begins at 8 a.m. ET on Sunday with 18 holes each of the three days. An awards presentation will take place following the final round on Tuesday. Admission to the event is free and open to the public, and live scoring can be found through www.GolfStat.com.

The event features all nine American teams that sponsor women’s golf. The nine institutions that sponsor women’s golf are UCF, Cincinnati, East Carolina (ECU), Houston, Memphis, USF, SMU, Tulane and Tulsa.

Houston (No. 28), SMU (No. 29), East Carolina (No. 32) and Tulane (No. 44) are ranked among the nation’s Top 50 teams in the GolfStat team rankings released April 12.

Last year’s champion, UCF, will look to defend its title. The Knights won both team and individual medalist honors in 2015. The 2015 individual medalist, Monifa Sealy, won the title after defeating SMU’s Jenny Haglund in a one-hole playoff. Haglund, a senior, took home championship medalist honors in 2014. She was named the American Women’s Golf Player of the Week once this season. Teammate Lindsey McCurdy earned the same honor during the final week of regular season play. McCurdy also took home September Player of the Month honors.

East Carolina’s Frida Gustafsson Spang was a three-time American Player of the Week selection this season. The senior won three events this year and set a new East Carolina record with six career individual titles, surpassing former Pirate Adrienne Millican (2002-05).
