East Carolina, Memphis Lead American Women's Golf Championship Through Round One

PALM COAST, Fla. –
East Carolina (309) and Memphis (309) tied for the lead after a windy opening day at the 2016 American Women’s Golf Championship Sunday afternoon at Hammock Beach Resort & Golf Club.
 
Seniors Frida Gustafsson Spang (-1, 71) and Nicoline Engstroem Skaug (E, 72) paced the No. 32 Pirates after the first 18 holes of play. The Tigers, meanwhile, were led by three players in the Top 8 in Emily Goldenstein (+2, 74), Madison Thomas (+4, 76) and Leighann Cabush (+4, 76).
 
UCF (311), USF (311) and SMU (311) each tied for third as teams battled 20-25 mile-per-hour wind gusts during round one.

Gustafsson Spang is the individual leader. The senior tied Cincinnati’s Valentina Herrera and SMU’s Brigitte Dunne with a round-high four birdies on the day.
 
Herrera is in second place at 72 (E), while Goldenstein, Dunne and Nicole Autrique (USF) are tied for third overall at 74 (+2).
 
The second round will begin at 8 a.m. eastern on Monday.
