Houston Takes Five Stroke Lead at American Women’s Golf Championship


CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL

PALM COAST, Fla. – No. 28 Houston climbed six spots on the leaderboard Monday and the Cougars hold a five-shot lead in the team standings following the second day of competition at the 2016 American Women’s Golf Championship at Hammock Beach Resort & Golf Club.
 
The third and final round of the championship will begin Tuesday at 8 a.m. eastern. An awards ceremony and trophy presentation will take place shortly following the conclusion of the final round.
 
 
 
The Cougars shot a second-round best 285 on Monday and currently lead the field with a 604 (391-285). Houston’s round of 285 is the lowest 18-hole total in American women’s golf championship history. UCF and SMU held the previous lowest round mark with a 287 in 2015.
 
USF is the runner-up with a 609 (311-298), while No. 32 East Carolina is in third and one stroke behind the Bulls with a 610 (309-301). 

Just one stroke separates the top four individuals following second round action. UCF’s Ashley Holder (75-70) leads the field with a one-over-par score of 145, while SMU senior Jenny Haglund shot a second-round 70 to finish two-over 146 (76-70). USF’s Ashley Burke (74-73) shot a second-round 73 and comes in at third with 3-over 147, while East Carolina’s Frida Gustafsson Spang (71-77) is in fourth with a four-over 148.
