PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly softball honors, for the week ending April 24.
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Astin Donovan • LF • So. • USF • Guilford, Conn.
Donovan has been named Player of the Week after posting a .636 average (7-for-11) and a .727 slugging percentage in four games. She recorded three multi-hit games over the weekend as No. 23/20 USF went 3-0 in a conference series against NR/RV Tulsa. The product of Guildford, Conn., also had one of the Bulls’ four hits in a nonconference contest against No. 1/1 Florida on Wednesday. Donovan hit a double and had eight total bases on the week, while scoring a run and adding a RBI. The sophomore also produced a 1.000 fielding percentage this week.
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Shelby Turnier • P • Sr. • UCF • Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
Turnier has earned Pitcher of the Week honors for the fourth time this season as she collected a pair of conference wins against Memphis, pushing her total to 74 career victories at UCF. The senior is now within four wins of the program’s career victories record (78). In 16.1 innings pitched over three games, the Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., native struck out 17 batters, while giving up 11 hits, four walks and three earned runs for a 1.29 ERA. Turnier’s 17 strikeouts on the weekend increased her season total to a league-best 204, and career total to 783.
WEEKLY HONOR ROLL
Kalyn Cenal • 1B • Sr. • UCF • Tampa, Fla.
Led the team with a .714 batting average on the weekend, as she posted a pair of multi-hit games. Cenal added three RBIs to become the sixth Knight in school history to reach 100 career RBIs. Defensively, she posted a 1.000 fielding percentage on the weekend, with 18 putouts.
Alyssa Gardea • CF • Sr. • UConn • Corona, Calif.
Totaled four hits on the week for a .444 batting average, including a 3-for-6 performance at the plate against Boston College. Gardea tallied four RBIs, with a double, home run and two runs scored in the nonconference contest. The senior hit a two-run homer in the 11
th inning against BC to help boost the Huskies to a 7-4 win.
Casey Alcorn • SS • Sr. • East Carolina • Hummelstown, Pa.
Hit .357 on the week, with a double, a home run and two RBIs. In four games Alcorn scored three runs and had nine total bases, with a .643 slugging percentage and .400 on base mark. The senior helped lead East Carolina to its first conference series win of the season, and first series victory over Houston since 2009.
Courtney Klingler • 1B • Sr. • Houston • Manvel, Texas
Went 4-for-8 with two doubles, a home run and eight RBIs over the weekend, including a grand slam that sealed Houston’s 9-0 run-rule victory against East Carolina in game one of the series. Klingler had a 2-for-2 performance at the plate, and totaled seven RBIs in the game-one win.
Erica Nunn • P • Sr. • USF • Apex, N.C.
Went 3-0 in conference play against NR/RV Tulsa, bringing her conference win total to 11. Nunn threw 12.1 innings of conference action, allowing no runs on eight hits while striking out seven. For the week, she was 3-1 with a 1.29 ERA, as the Bulls faced No. 1/1 Florida in a midweek nonconference game. Against the Gators she allowed just three runs on five hits, while striking out six.
