ORLANDO, Fla. – The UConn men and East Carolina women have taken the lead through two days of competition at the 2016 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the UCF Soccer and Track Complex.
With a total of 37 points, UConn leads second-place Memphis by 11 points. The Tigers’ squad (26) is up 23 points and five places from yesterday. In third place is Tulsa with 23 points, followed by Cincinnati in fourth (21) and USF in fifth (20). Houston (15), East Carolina (8) and Tulane (6) round out the field of eight men’s teams.
East Carolina tallied 30 points during the second day of the championship to total 38 points and move in to first place. Memphis trails the Pirates by five (33), while UCF and Cincinnati are tied for third place with 29 points each. SMU is in fifth place (25), while UConn sits in sixth place with 14 points. Tulsa (9), USF (8), Houston (6), Tulane (4) and Temple complete the women’s standings.
Three seniors; SMU’s Lucija Cvitanovic and Memphis’ Luis Hanssler and Carolina Carmichael, each earned their third-straight outdoor titles in their respective events.
Cvitanovic claimed her third-straight heptathlon title, with 5,611 points. The senior broke her own meet record of 5,534 points, set in 2014. Memphis’ Martine Bye took second place with 5,254 points, followed by East Carolina’s Aminah Ghaffar in third (4,243). Bye broke Cvitanovic’s previous meet record of 46.67 meters in heptathlon javelin throw with her mark of 46.90 meters.
Hanssler three-peated as the decathlon champion, totaling 7,369 points over the two days. Junior Patrick Meyer of UConn posted 6,728 points to take second place, while Cincinnati sophomore Alex Bloom finished in third place (6,566 points). In the decathlon 110-meter hurdles, Hanssler ran a 14.60, surpassing his previous meet record of 14.74.
Carmichael collected her third-consecutive women’s pole vault title, reaching 4.25 meters while teammate Clara Amat-Fernandez took third in the event (4.05 meters). Cincinnati’s Alyssa McBride was the runner-up with a height of 4.15 meters.
USF senior Devin Screen won the men’s discus throw with a mark of 57.01 meters, to claim his second all-conference honor. Memphis’ Luke Vaughn took second (56.98 meters), while Adam Manns of East Carolina finished in third place (53.86 meters).
East Carolina had two of the top-three and four of the top-six finishers in the women’s discus throw. Senior Raqurra Ishmar set a meet record as she took first place with a 53.90-meter toss. Tulsa freshman Cecilya Johnson followed in second (53.41 meters), while ECU senior Kayla Padgett earned her second 2016 all-conference honor with a third-place finish (51.78 meters).
Six Houston athletes qualified for the men’s 200-meter final, led by freshman Jacarias Martin with a time of 20.94 in the preliminaries. On the women’s side, SMU freshman Latessa Johnson headed the 200-meter preliminaries in 23.31.
Houston freshman Amere Lattin set the stadium record in the men's 400-meter hurdle preliminaries with a time of 51.13, narrowly missing the meet record (51.12). Tulane freshman Jessica Duckett led the way in the women's preliminaries with a time of 58.89.
Houston freshman Brian Bell set a new meet record of 1:49.71 to lead the men's 800-meter preliminaries. In the women’s competition, six UConn women qualified for the final as senior Kat Vodopia paced the field with a preliminary time of 2:07.68.
The third day of the championships will begin on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. ET with the men’s pole vault.
