USF Wins American Men's Golf Championship for Second Consecutive Season

LECANTO, Fla. –
No. 15 USF shot a 19-under-par 845 and defended their title to win the 2016 American Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Championship by 20 strokes over runner-up and No. 39 Memphis Tuesday afternoon at Black Diamond Ranch.

 

The Bulls shot rounds of 285, 282 and 278, and placed four individuals among the top-6 to claim their third championship title in four years. The Tigers, who shot the second lowest round of the day, finished second with a three-round 1-over par total of 865 (294-290-281). No. 35 Houston was third with an 871 (290-289-292).
 
Individual medalist Aksel Olsen (USF) shot a 7-under 209 over the three rounds, including a 3-under 69 on Monday. The Bulls took top medalist honors for the second consecutive season after Ryan Fricker carded a tournament record 11-under 205 in 2015.  
Memphis’ Thomas Perrot followed Olsen individually and finished as the championship runner-up at 6-under 210. Perrot shot the lowest round of the day with a 5-under 67.
 
USF teammates Chase Koepka (-5, 211) and Claudio Correa (-4, 212) finished third and fourth, respectively, while Temple’s Brandon Matthews (-3, 213) came in at fifth with a three-round total of 213 (-3).
 
 
The 2016 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships selections will be announced live on Thursday, May 5 at 9:30 a.m. ET during Morning Drive, Golf Channel’s daily morning news and lifestyle show, and streamed live on the Golf Channel website. NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals take place May 16-18 and the National Championship, hosted by University of Oregon, is set for May 27-June 1 at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.
