Week One Men's Soccer Honors Announced



PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly men’s soccer honors for the week ending Sunday, Aug. 28.
 
Offensive Player of the Week
Abdou Mbacke Thiam * So. * F * UConn
Mbacke Thiam scored a goal in each game last week and finished with five points, leading UConn to an undefeated 2-0 mark to start the season. The sophomore had three points – a goal and an assist – in the Huskies’ opener vs. Iona on Friday. He also scored in UConn’s 2-0 win over Nebraska-Omaha on Sunday.
 
Defensive Player of the Week
Prosper Figbe * So. * B * USF
Figbe anchored a back line that held Michigan scoreless in 110 minutes of action vs. the Wolverines on Friday. The Bulls played a man down for the final 55 minutes and collected its first shutout of the season.
 
Goalkeeper of the Week
Alex Cagle * R-Jr. * Temple
Cagle led the Owls in the net through 180 minutes of action across two matches. The redshirt junior made three saves over the weekend and notched two shutouts as the Owls defeated Manhattan 3-0 on Friday and crosstown rival Saint Joseph’s 2-0 on Sunday.
 
Rookie of the Week
Niko Petridis * Fr. * M * UConn
Petridis scored his first career goal in UConn’s 2-0 win over Nebraska-Omaha on Sunday. The midfielder found the back of the net in the 85th minute in the victory over the Mavericks. The Huskies moved to 2-0 in season-opening play with the win.
