Tulane’s Ray and SMU’s Giordano Take Home Weekly Volleyball Honors



PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly volleyball honors for the week ending Sep. 11.
 
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sarah Ray • Jr. • OH • Tulane
Ray was named MVP of the Clemson Classic leading Tulane to a 3-0 weekend and its second tournament title this season. Ray finished with 52 kills averaging 4.73 kills per set in the tournament. The junior had a career-high 27 kills in a five set win against North Dakota while hitting .396 against the Fighting Hawks. Ray has led the team in kills for four straight matches.
 
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Janelle Giordano • Sr. • MB • SMU
Giordano was named to the N.C. State Invitational All-Tournament Team helping the Mustangs to a 2-1 record. Giordano averaged 1.82 blocks per set including back-to-back eight block performances against Delaware and High Point. The eight blocks against Delaware and High Point were the third highest in a three-set match in school history.
 
WEEKLY HONOR ROLL   
Jale Hervey • Sr. • OH • UCF
Hervey was named to the Holiday Inn Orlando East UCF Area Classic All-Tournament Team. Finished with 56 kills and had a double-double (22 kills, 11 digs) against FAU.
 
Brandee Markwith • Fr. • DS/L • East Carolina
Markwith was named to the Campbell Invitational All-Tournament Team. The freshman had a career-high 32 digs in a win against Campbell. The 32 digs were the second highest in the American Athletic Conference this season.
 
Kayla Williams • Fr. • OH • UConn
Williams was named Dog Pound Challenge MVP helping the Huskies to a 3-0 weekend. Had double-doubles against Yale and St. Francis. Had 4.44 kills per set and 3.22 digs per set. 
 
Katie Hegarty • Jr. • RS • SMU
Hegarty was named the MVP of the N.C. State Invitational. Finished with 47 kills, averaging 4.27 kills per set. Led SMU in scoring in all three matches.
 
Kirsten Overton • Sr. • MB • Temple
Overton was named to the All-Tournament Team of the Cherry and White Challenge. Overton finished the weekend with 19 blocks averaging 1.58 blocks per set. The senior hit .706 against New Hampshire and only had 4 errors in the three matches.
