The American Athletic Conference continued its impressive performance in nonconference games in Week 3, while two exciting league games gave Navy and Houston an early headstart in the West Division race.

Navy won its 19th straight against an unranked opponent as the Midshipmen rallied past Tulane, 21-14, in New Orleans. QB Will Worth rushed for the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter for the second straight game to lift Navy to a 2-0 start in conference play.

Houston rallied for a win in its conference opener as the Cougars scored the last 28 points of a 40-16 victory at Cincinnati Thursday. With Houston facing a 16-12 fourth-quarter deficit, QB Greg Ward Jr. rushed for two touchdowns and the Cougars scored on two interception returns to get their 17th win in their last 18 games.

USF is off to a 3-0 start in which the Bulls’ closest game was a 25-point victory. The Bulls used a 28-point second quarter to cruise to a 45-20 win at Syracuse behind three touchdowns by WR Rodney Adams and a 115-yard, two-TD effort from RB Marlon Mack.

Memphis is 2-0 under coach Mike Norvell after the Tigers took a 43-7 win against Kansas at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. QB Riley Ferguson threw two touchdown passes for the Tigers.

UConn saw its second straight game decided at the wire as the Huskies edged Virginia 13-10 in East Hartford. A 43-yard field goal by K Bobby Puyol stood up as the gamewinner after the Cavaliers’ bid to force overtime sailed wide as time expired.

SMU and Tulsa picked up wins against FCS opponents as the Mustangs beat Liberty, 29-14, in their home opener, while the Golden Hurricane overwhelmed North Carolina A&T, 58-21.

Three teams from the American dropped close battles Saturday as Maryland edged UCF 30-24 in double-overtime, South Carolina escaped East Carolina 20-15, and Penn State held off Temple, 34-27..
