Navy's Toneo Gulley

Before 2016, the name Toneo Gulley might not have stood out on the Navy football stat sheet.

In the last three seasons combined, Gulley had only touched the football 37 times. But forget the stats and focus on the fact that Gulley was chosen by his teammates to be a 2016 captain for the Midshipmen.

Gulley brings energy and charisma to the Navy locker room and his presence is key for a team that is looking to build on its 2015 success, which included an 11-2 record, a share of the American Athletic Conference West Division title, the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy, a Military Bowl victory, and a No. 18 national ranking to finish the year.

If you hadn’t noticed Gulley in the past, he made his mark in Navy’s season opener against Fordham. Gulley hauled in his first receiving touchdown - a 57-yard completion from Will Worth - in a 52-16 win over the Rams.

Gulley will have a new look on Saturday as he sheds his previous jersey number of 22 in favor of No. 2. Gulley and  fellow captain Daniel Gonzalez will both switch their jersey numbers in honor of senior quarterback Tago Smith, who was lost for the season with a knee injury in the first half against Fordham.
