INDIANAPOLIS – USF men’s basketball junior Ruben Guerrero was named the recipient of the 2015-16 NCAA Division I Male Sportsmanship Award, as selected by the NCAA Committee on Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct.
Guerrero, a native of Marbella, Spain, has distinguished himself through demonstrated acts of sportsmanship and ethical behavior, earning the American Athletic Conference Sportsmanship Award in 2016. The award was voted on by the men’s basketball coaches in the conference.
Guerrero averaged 5.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game last season as a sophomore, while working towards a degree in finance.
Guerrero has received recognition on campus for the past two years as his peers voted him the Most Spirited Student-Athlete at USF’s Stampede of Champions. In March, Guerrero demonstrated some of that spirit, calming a crowd by encouraging the group to cheer more appropriately at a tennis match.
In a release, USF head coach Orlando Antigua said, “I’m really happy for Ruben. He exemplifies everything that is being an athlete and a student here at the University of South Florida. He has been an incredible teammate and student-athlete and I’m glad that he’s getting recognition nation-wide.”
