Freshmen Cumberland, Vital Earn Weekly Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly men’s basketball honors for the week of Jan. 23-29.

Jarron Cumberland · Fr. · G · Cincinnati · Wilmington, Ohio
Cumberland, a two-time American Rookie of the Week, earns his first player of the week after leading No. 19/19 Cincinnati to a 2-0 week. The freshman averaged a team-high 20.5 points on the week as the Bearcats extended their winning streak to 12 games and set a new mark with 21 consecutive home victories. Cumberland keyed Cincinnati’s comeback home win over No. 24/22 Xavier, sparking the Bearcats’ rally with 13 of his 15 points in the second half. Cumberland scored a career-high 26 points on 8-of-11 shooting with six three-pointers in the Bearcats’ 94-53 home win over USF on Sunday.


Christian Vital · Fr. · F · UConn · Queens Village, N.Y.
In helping UConn go 2-0 last week, Vital averaged 15.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game. The freshman opened the week by posting a career-high 17 points on the back of five three-pointers in the Huskies’ victory at USF. On Saturday, Vital came off the bench to post his first double-double, finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds in the 10-point win.
Shake Milton · So. · G · SMU · Owasso, Okla.
In SMU’s lone game of the week, Milton led a short-handed squad to a win at UCF, the Mustangs 14th win in their last 15 games. With 19 points, Milton led the Mustangs in scoring for the third consecutive game, adding six rebounds and four assists.
Jalen Adams · So. · G · UConn · Roxbury, Mass.
Adams posted his fourth double-double of the year in UConn’s victory at USF, leading the Huskies with 20 points and 12 assists. The 12 assists matched Adams’ career-high and mark the single-game high in The American this season. Adams averaged 14.0 points and 9.0 assists per game in the two wins..

Barkley notched double-doubles in both East Carolina games this week as the Pirates split a pair of games. The lefty led ECU to a three-point win over Tulsa with 19 points and 11 rebounds before posting 13 points and 11 boards against Memphis.
Junior Etou · R-Jr. · F · Tulsa · Republic of Congo
Averaging 21.5 points and 9.0 rebounds last week, Etou helped Tulsa improve to 6-2 in The American. Etou opened the week with 31 points and 12 rebounds at East Carolina, accounting for almost half of the Golden Hurricane’s points. The junior added 12 points and six boards as Tulsa knocked off UCF to close the week.
Rob Gray · R-Jr. · G · Houston · Forest City, N.C.
Gray helped Houston to a 2-0 week, averaging 20.0 points and knocking down over half his attempts from the field. After scoring 12 points as the Cougars snapped a three-game skid, Gray erupted for 28 points in Houston’s win over Temple, grabbing seven rebounds and handing out five assists.
