2017 STATISTICS
> The top of The American standings will collide this weekend, as Wichita State
22 hosts SMU at 8 p.m. ET on Friday, October 13. Both teams enter the match 6-0 in league play and will be meeting for just the fourth time ever. The Shockers hold a 2-1 advantage in the all-time series, coming out on top, 3-2, in the most recent meeting on Sept. 6, 2012. SMU is the two-time defending American champion, while Wichita State has won the Missouri Valley Conference four times.
The match will be a true battle between offense and defense, as Wichita State leads the conference in assists and kills per set, while averaging a conference-high .348 hitting percentage. On the other hand, SMU ranks 20th in the nation with a league-leading 17.31 digs per set and are first in conference play with 2.62 blocks per set.
> ECU joins the Mustangs and Shockers in coming off a 2-0 weekend. The Pirates have won three in a row and are tied for third in league standings after taking down Temple for the first time in program history and defeating UConn. ECU will look to carry the momentum into this weekend when it hosts Tulane and Tulsa.
> After falling to ECU, Temple bounced back and delivered Cincinnati its second conference loss of the year. The three teams are all tied for third place in American standings with 4-2 records. The Owls have shifted gears with their offense firing on all cylinders, as Temple has the most kills (350) and assists (332) in the league. Temple will head to the Sunshine State to face USF and UCF over the weekend.
> Two of the conference’s top-10 points scorers play for the Bearcats. Carly Nolan has averaged 4.87 points per set, while Erica Kostelac has logged 3.83. Both Nolan and setter Jade Tingelhoff have 10 double-doubles, which are tied for second in the conference. The Bearcats split last weekend’s action on the road and are coming off a 3-1 loss to Temple, but are back at home this weekend, welcoming Houston and Tulane to the gym at St. Ursula Academy.
> Five teams are tied for sixth in conference play with a 2-4 record, including UCF, UConn, Houston, USF and Tulsa. Tulane is 1-4 in The American, and Memphis will be searching for its first league win this weekend when it hosts Tulsa and SMU.
