Women's Soccer: Early Goal Advances SMU to Conference Championship Semifinals



ORLANDO, Fla. – No. 6-seeded SMU (10-6-3) defeated No. 3-seeded Cincinnati (12-4-3), 1-0, Wednesday in the first match of the First Round of The American Conference Championship. Allie Thornton scored the lone goal.
 
In the 36th minute, Thornton sent a long ball into the back of the Cincinnati goal. Claire Oates headed a cleared ball towards Thornton who was outside of the box and found the corner of the net to score for the Mustangs. The goal would hold, sealing the victory and advancing SMU to the Conference Championship semifinals.
 
The goal was Thornton’s fourth and the Mustangs’ 26th of the season. SMU goalkeeper Catie Brown made two saves in the match to record her seventh complete shutout of the season.
 
Cincinnati out-shot SMU, 14-9, in the match Wednesday. Both teams had three corner kicks in the match. The loss was Cincinnati’s fourth on the year.
 
The win sends SMU to the semifinals for the second straight year. The Mustangs will face No. 2-seeded USF (11-3-2) on Friday at 4:30 p.m. ET. The match will air on The American Digital Network.
