DALLAS, TEXAS – Second-seeded UCF defeated No. 3 UConn, 1-0, in the American Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Championship semifinals Friday evening at Westcott Field. The Knights advanced to the championship game with the victory and will face the winner of fourth-seeded Temple and top seed SMU Sunday at 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. CT. The game will air live on ESPNU.
The two teams were tied 0-0 at the half and the score remained that way until Yoni Sorokin found the back of the net in the 72
nd minute to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. He scored from the middle right side on an assist from Gorka Aperribay. The tally was the third goal of the season for Sorokin.
UCF (8-5-2) and UConn (8-8-2) were evenly matched with 10 shot attempts each while the Knights led 8-3 in corner kicks. UCF keeper Matt Rosenberg made two saves and recorded a shutout, while UConn’s Scott Levene finished with two saves.
Matias Pyysalo led the Knights with three shots, two of which were on goal. Abdou Mbacke Thiam had three shot attempts for UConn, including one on goal.
