No. 12 Cincinnati dominated en route to the Cayman Islands Classic championship, while Tulane remained unbeaten after a home win. USF also collected a victory before the Thanksgiving holiday.
No. 12/13 Cincinnati 78, Wyoming 53
GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands (AP) -- Gary Clark scored 17 points, Kyle Washington had his first double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds, and No. 12 Cincinnati won the inaugural Cayman Islands Classic 78-53 over Wyoming on Wednesday night.
Clark was named the MVP of the three-game event with 49 points, 28 boards and seven assists. Jacob Evans was also on the all-tournament team for the Bearcats.
For the second straight game, Cincinnati (6-0) jumped out to a big lead.
"This is a good start to the season," Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin said. "You practice winning three in row, but down here you have to focus especially with fun in sun."
Clark scored the game's first nine points -- and his teams' opening 13 points -- and Cincinnati extended it to 20-2 after nine minutes. Wyoming only made one field goal in the final six minutes of the half but Louis Adams' basket pulled the Cowboys within 37-20 at the break.
Clark only played nine minutes in the first half because of two fouls, but he hit 6 of 8 field goals. He made the first basket after halftime and Wyoming had one field goal in the first five minutes to trail 47-24 after Evans' 3-pointer.
Evans and Cane Broome each added 10 points for Cincinnati.
"They all wished we would have had a few more days in the ocean," Cronin said. "I can't imagine to have a better place to play. We'll be back in four years if invited."
On Tuesday night, Jarron Cumberland opened the scoring with 3-pointers on consecutive possessions and Evans hit another before Richmond scored. When Justin Jenifer hit a 3 just beyond the five-minute mark, Cincinnati was up 14-4. The Bearcats beat the Spiders 75-48 to advance to the title game.
Cumberland was just 2 of 6 from the floor against Wyoming.
Hayden Dalton led Wyoming (4-1) with three 3-pointers and 15 points. Alan Herndon and Louis Adams each added 12 points for the Cowboys, who were outrebounded 43-28.
The Cowboys were just 6-of-31 shooting with 15:13 remaining in the game.
"They came out more assertive and I thought that we played more on our heels and were passive," Wyoming coach Allen Edwards said. "Momentum took its place early and from that point we were fighting trying to get back in the game."
Tulane 80, Miami (Ohio) 59
NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Melvin Frazier scored 20 points with eight rebounds and a career-high five steals and Tulane beat Miami (OH) 80-59 on Wednesday night to win its fifth straight.
Cameron Reynolds scored 15 points, Ray Ona Embo added 14 and Samir Sehic 10 for the Green Wave (5-0), which made 33 of 62 from the field (53.2 percent) to the RedHawks' 19 of 49 (38.8 percent).
Nike Sibande made a layup and two 3-pointers and the RedHawks closed to 55-47 early in the second half, but Tulane used a 14-2 run in which Frazier scored five points while the RedHawks went scoreless for more than three minutes to pull away for good. Reynolds' 3 with 2:49 left made it a 22-point lead.
Reynolds' opening jumper put Tulane up for good and the Green Wave led 37-30 at halftime behind Sehic's eight points after shooting 50 percent from the field to the RedHawks' 37.5 percent.
Sibande scored 21 with four 3-pointers and Logan McLane added 10 points for the RedHawks (3-2).
USF 75, Howard 52
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Stephan Jiggetts scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds as USF beat Howard 75-52 on Wednesday night.
Jiggetts was 5 of 9 from the field including four 3-pointers for the Bulls (3-2). Payton Banks added 14 points and Tulio Da Silva had 10 points and six rebounds. The team averaged 45 percent shooting from the field compared to 33 percent for Howard.
After a slow start, Jiggetts and Banks combined for a pair of 3-pointers to spark a 13-0 run that gave USF a 29-16 lead with 4:04 remaining in the first half on its way to a 36-24 advantage at the break.
The Bulls opened the second half on a 20-6 surge that included 3-pointers by Banks, Jiggetts and Justin Brown and two dunks by Malik Martin to lead 56-30 with 11:58 to play.
RJ Cole scored 17 points with six assists for the winless Bison (0-6). Charles Williams added 15 points and led with five rebounds.
No. 13/12 Notre Dame 67, No. 6/6 Wichita State 66
LAHAINA, Hawaii -- Martinas Geben hit two free throws with 2.3 seconds left and No. 13 Notre Dame rallied from a 16-point deficit to beat No. 6 Wichita State 67-66 in the Maui Invitational championship game on Wednesday night.
Notre Dame (5-1) trailed most of the game, but clawed its way back, by slowing the high-scoring Shockers (4-1) and working the ball inside on offense.
Notre Dame pulled within one, but Landry Shamet, having a quiet scoring night, put the Shockers up 64-61 with a running jumper with 1:24 left.
Bonzie Colson, Notre Dame's preseason All-America, cut it back to one on a jumper in the lane. Again, Shamet answered, on a pull-up jumper in the lane and Colson airballed a 3-pointer, but scored on a layup after Matt Farrell stole the inbounds pass.
Zach Brown blocked Farrell's layup, but the Irish got the ball on an baseline inbounds play. Geben cut to the basket and was fouled by Shaquille Morris. He hit both free throws and Wichita State fumbled away its last possession.
Colson finished with 25 points and 11 rebounds in Notre Dame's first Maui title.
Brown led the Shockers with 14 points.
The Maui Invitational has a history of having marquee matchups in the title game and this one was no different.
Wichita State and Notre Dame were the only ranked teams in the field, a pair of programs loaded with talent, depth and Final Four aspirations.
The Irish flexed their muscles in overpowering their first two Maui opponents, crushing Division II Chaminade and LSU.
The Shockers had a little rougher ride in their opener, needing to rally from 18 down to beat California before rolling over Marquette in the semifinals.
Their meeting in the title game matched two of the nation's most efficient offenses.
Wichita State happens to be pretty good on defense, too, and muddled things up for the Irish in the early going, denying passes, contesting perimeter shots and clogging the paint on the Irish's drives.
The Shockers were just as good on offense, building an 11-point lead midway through the first half and going up 37-23 at halftime after making 15 of 30 shots, including 5 of 11 from 3-point range.
Notre Dame started going inside in the second half and tightened up on defense, scratching the Shockers' lead down to 55-50.
A banked-in 3-pointer by T.J. Gibbs and a traditional one by Colson made it a three-point game with 5 minutes left.
Trailing all night, the Irish were back in it -- and made the most of it.
Northern Iowa 61, #--/rv SMU 58
PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas -- Spencer Haldeman scored 15 points to help Northern Iowa beat SMU 61-58 in Wednesday's final first-round game at the Battle 4 Atlantis.
The Panthers (4-1) shot 48 percent and controlled the glass in their fourth straight win since a season-opening loss to reigning national champion North Carolina. Northern Iowa took the lead for good midway through the first half and led by as many as 15 before the break.
The Panthers led just 53-52 with 6 1/2 minutes left, but never relinquished the lead. Bennett Koch hit two key free throws in the last 12 seconds to keep Northern Iowa in control.
Jarrey Foster scored 19 points to lead the Mustangs (4-1), who shot 39 percent and made 6 of 21 3-pointers (29 percent).
Northern Iowa advanced to Thursday's semifinals to face North Carolina State, which upset No. 2 Arizona. SMU will face the Wildcats in the consolation bracket.
