PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s final weekly men’s soccer honors for the week ending Sunday, Nov. 5.
Offensive Player of the Week
Garrett McLaughlin * So. * F * SMU
McLaughlin scored the game-winning goal for SMU in the 78
th minute Saturday in a 1-0 win over UConn. The Mustangs won the American Athletic Conference regular season title outright with the victory and clinched the No. 1 seed in the conference championship, which gets underway Friday at Westcott Field.
Defensive Player of the Week
Jordan Cano * Sr. * B * SMU
Cano earns his second Defensive Player of the Week nod after anchoring the SMU backline to a 1-0 shutout win over UConn last Saturday. Cano and the SMU defense limited the Huskies to two shots on goal during the match.
Goalkeeper of the Week
Michael Nelson * R-Sr. * SMU
Nelson posted his sixth consecutive shutout and fourth in league play last Saturday as SMU defeated UConn, 1-0, for the American regular season title. The redshirt senior made two saves in 90 minutes of action against the Huskies. He leads the conference in save percentage and is tied for first in shutouts in league play.
Rookie of the Week
Chase Bromstedt * Fr. * M * Tulsa
Bromstedt scored his second and third career goals against Memphis in the final game of the season. His goals came in the 66
th and 72
nd minute for the fifth and sixth goal of the contest for Tulsa. Bromstedt had the second-most shots and shots on goal for the Golden Hurricane in the contest with three each in his 78 minutes of play.
