Highlights
- Six American Athletic Conference schools opened their 2017 indoor track and field seasons over the weekend, from Thursday, November 30 through Saturday, December 2.
- The UConn men’s track and field team began its indoor season at the Boston University Opener. In the field events, the Huskies had a first place finish in the triple jump. Malik Snead was the event winner with a leap of 51’11.75” (15.84m). Craig Hunter led an UConn contingent in the pole vault, taking second place overall, clearing a height of 16’6.75” (5.05m). In the 800-meters, freshman Tyler Gleen picked-up a second place finish, posting a time of 1:50.30.
- Memphis sprinter Cera Chavez and the men's 4x400 meter relay posted big performances in pacing the Tigers track and field effort at the Vanderbilt Opener Saturday. Chavez won the women's 60 meters and also ran a leg on the women's 4x400 meter relay, as the Tigers women placed second in the relay. Chavez and the men's 4x400 meter relay set school indoor records. Chavez ran a 7.39 in the women's 60 meters to win the event in a school-record time. The Tigers' 4x400 meter relay finished first in a program-record time of 3:13.19. Overall, Memphis won five total events (men/women combined) and had 18 top-three performances (men/women combined) Saturday.
- Temple women's track and field started the indoor season at the Fastrack Season Opener hosted at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y. The squad brought home two first place finishes courtesy of freshman Ebonee Jackson, who won the 60m hurdles, and junior Crystal Jones, who placed first in the high jump. In the first competition of the year the Owls also earned eight other top-10 finishes across six individual events. After breaking a personal record in the preliminary round, Jackson advanced to the finals. She reached a personal best time of 8.59 in the finals to take first overall in the event. Jones earned the individual title in the high jump with a mark of 5'5" (1.65m).
- The women's Tulane team, led by junior Rebekah Markel, set numerous personal records Friday at the BSC Panther Icebreaker in Birmingham, Ala., while junior Emmanuel Rotich and redshirt junior Lauren Bartels both etched their names into the Tulane record book Saturday at the Boston University Season Opener. Markel shined in the pole vault finals and delivered a first-place height with a mark of 4.00m to set a new personal best and earn the fourth-best mark in Tulane indoor history.
Rotich, on the heels of a historic cross country season, finished second in the men 5000m run, setting his personal record in the process with a time of 13:52.15. The time eclipses his previous best of 14:04.80, which was set outdoors at the Penn Relays (4/27/17).
- The Tulsa men and women's track team opened its indoor season at the Bob Timmons Challenge on Saturday. The Golden Hurricane collected three individual victories and added one first-place finish in the women's distance medley.
Aaliyah Birmingham earned her first win of the year with a time of 7.412 seconds in the 60-meter dash, which was a fraction of a second faster than ORU's Aneikeme Etim's time of 7.420 seconds. In the 3,000-meter run, Alyssa Bolliger started her senior campaign with a victory as she posted a time of 10:23.77. The group of Ashley Barnes, Allison Bailey, Reagan Hausmann, and Quin Washington won the distance medley relay with a mark of 12:49.15.
On the men's side, Aleks Rapp secured a first-place finish with a hurl of 19.69 meters (64-07.25) in the weight throw. Bailey Stewart finished second in the 800-meter run with a mark of 1:57.94, while Isaac Dobos also notched a second-place finish, with a time of 4:24.96 in the mile run. Hans Kunsch, Zachary Adee, Henry Visser, and Stewart finished second in the 4x400-meter relay as they notched a time of 3:20.93.
- Wichita State's All-American Hunter Veith set a Wichita State school record and the Heskett Center record to win the Shocker Multi heptathlon with 5,998 points. Veith won the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.10 and the pole vault with a mark of 4.76m/15-7.25, placed second in the 1000m with a personal best 2:47.18, to score 2,589 second day points. Veith finished the first day with 3,409 points after winning three of the four events on day one.
On the women's side competing in the pentathlon, Kendra Henry finished third setting a personal best with 3,309 points. Henry set personal best in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.44 and the long jump with a mark of 4.77m/15-7.75.
