No. 6 Wichita State and Memphis each rallied for home wins on Tuesday night, while SMU fell on the road at TCU and UConn dropped a contest at Madison Square Garden to Syracuse.
#6/6 Wichita State 95, South Dakota State 85
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) -- Gregg Marshall was willing to divulge some of the halftime adjustments he made that enabled No. 6 Wichita State to rally past pesky South Dakota State on Tuesday night.
He just wasn't going to replicate the R-rated delivery.
The Shockers began switching ball screens that frustrated them the first 20 minutes, and a full-court press got the Jackrabbits out of sorts. And after slowly digging from a 13-point second-half hole, the Shockers escaped with a 95-85 victory over the Summit League favorites.
"The resolve, the toughness of these guys, the refuse-to-lose carried us tonight," Marshall said.
Landry Shamet led the way with 21 points and eight assists. Shaquille Morris had a big second half and finished with 20. Conner Frankamp added 16 points, setting the school record by hitting a 3-pointer in his 30th straight game. And big man Darral Willis Jr. finished with 13 points.
That was enough for the Shockers (7-1) to offset Mike Daum, who hit seven 3-pointers and poured in 31 points for South Dakota State. Daum also had six rebounds in a virtuoso performance.
"With Mike, he scores the ball so well and when he can command so much attention it gives other guys easier plays, easier looks," Jackrabbits coach T.J. Otzelberger said. "When he's playing with that confidence and swagger he had tonight, that makes everyone better."
The game was knotted 27-all midway through the first half when Daum hit one of his four first-half 3-pointers. That began a run over the next 5 minutes that pushed the Jackrabbits' advantage to 39-30 and silenced another crowd packed to the rafters of Koch Arena.
Daum wound up scoring 16 points in the first half, and the Jackrabbits -- who were trounced just up the road by No. 2 Kansas a couple of weeks ago -- shot 63 percent from the field in the first half.
"In the first half, we weren't communicating too much like we needed to," Morris said. "As soon as we started communicating, got back and got in a defense stance, we did a better job contesting shots."
Indeed, South Dakota State twice pushed its advantage to 13 points early in the second half before Marshall finally began slapping on a full-court press to change the tempo of the game.
It was a big improvement over their leaky half-court defense.
"It seemed like they were hitting everything. That doesn't happen too much around here," Morris said. "We talked about at halftime that we needed to get back in it, get the crowd riled up to give us the extra boost we needed."
The press cooled South Dakota State offensively, and the Shockers slowly chipped away at their deficit. Frankamp made three free throws, Morris knocked down a 3 and Rashard Kelly threw down a dunk to make it 76-all -- the first time it was tied since the 9:09 mark of the first half.
Daum set an illegal screen to earn his fourth foul and a spot on the bench with 5:53 left, and back-to-back-to-back baskets by Morris in the paint made it 89-81 with 2:26 to go.
The Shockers were never threatened again.
"I mean, a win's a win," Shamet said. "It wasn't a perfect game, but getting a win gives us some momentum going into a game against Oklahoma State."
Memphis 65, Samford 64
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Jamal Johnson grabbed an offensive rebound, sank a shot as he was being fouled and completed the 3-point play with 2.5 seconds left to rally Memphis to a 65-64 victory over Samford on Tuesday night.
Demetrius Denzel-Dyson hit a jumper with 18 seconds remaining to give Samford a 64-60 lead. Jeremiah Martin made a layup to pull Memphis within two points with 11 seconds left and when Raynere Thornton's steal led to a missed jumper by Jimario Rivers, Johnson was there for the putback and free throw. Johnson finished with six points.
Kyvon Davenport had 17 points and seven rebounds for the Tigers (5-2), while Martin added 15 points, six rebounds and four assists and Jimario Rivers finished with nine points and eight boards.
Denzel-Dyson paced the Bulldogs (2-7) with 17 points, six rebounds and four steals. Denzel-Dyson scored the final seven points of the first half for Samford, which took a 41-32 lead into intermission.
Davenport's layup gave the Tigers their first lead of the second half, 58-57, with fewer than five minutes to play. The lead changed hands four times in the final 3:11 and the Tigers held on when Denzel-Dyson couldn't corral a full-court pass in the final seconds.
#20/20 TCU 94, #rv/rv SMU 83
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) -- Kenrich Williams had 27 points to lead five TCU players in double figures, and got tackled after a steal and breakaway toward the basket as the 20th-ranked Horned Frogs extended the nation's longest winning streak to 14 games with a 94-83 victory over SMU on Tuesday night.
The Frogs (9-0) were already starting to separate themselves midway through the second half when Williams came up with an SMU turnover. The 6-foot-7 guard was going the other way when Ben Emelogu caught up from behind and essentially dragged him to the court.
After the flagrant foul, Williams made one free throw and TCU kept possession. After several passes, Desmond Bane hit a 3-pointer from the left wing in front of the Frogs' bench that put them up 67-56.
SMU (7-3) was coming off a 17-point home win over then-No.14 Southern Cal just three days earlier.
The Mustangs played at TCU, only about 40 miles from their Dallas campus, for the first time in four seasons.
Kouat Noi had 16 points for TCU, Bane had 14, Jaylen Fisher 11 and Ahmed Hamdy 10. Fisher had nine assists.
Williams, who was 7-of-8 shooting with five 3s, just missed his fifth straight double-double, finishing with nine rebounds. He also had five assists.
Ethan Chargois led five SMU players in double figures with 21 points, while Jarrey Foster had 19. Shake Milton had 18 points, but was only 1-of-7 from 3-point range, while Jimmy Whitt had 12 points before fouling out and Emelogu had 10.
TCU led for good after Fisher fed Williams for a 3-pointer with 14 1/2 minutes left to snap a 47-all tie.
Williams hit two 3-pointers to start the game and an opening 8-2 run for TCU. He had five quick points (a layup and 3-pointer) after SMU got within 10-9.
Vlad Brodziansky's 3-pointer put TCU up 23-16 midway through the first half before Milton scored eight for the Mustangs in a 13-2 spurt that put them ahead.
Williams then had two free throws before consecutive 3s by Noi put TCU back in front.
#--/rv Syracuse 72, UConn 63
NEW YORK (AP) -- Oshae Brissett had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Tyus Battle scored 22 points to lead Syracuse past UConn 72-63 on Tuesday night in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden.
The former Big East rivals failed to play a familiar classic at the Garden that had defined their series as one of the best in basketball. But fans of both teams enjoyed the give-and-take chants that filled a mostly full MSG on the night.
The Orange, coming off a 16-point loss to No. 2 Kansas, controlled from tipoff in a sloppy outing where they made only four 3-pointers and had nine assists.
Matthew Moyer scored 18 points and the Orange scored some easy buckets late in the second half to never let this win get away from them.
Jalen Adams led the Huskies (6-3) with 22 points and Christian Vital had 17.
Vital gave UConn a brief sign of life with a pair of 3s in the second half that sliced the deficit to 11. Vital fed Adams on the fastbreak for an easy bucket to make it a nine-point game and MSG was filled with "Let's Go Huskies!" chants.
But UConn couldn't do much more offensively -- and a big block by Syracuse forward Brissett and a UConn shot-clock violation slowed the Huskies' run. Coach Kevin Ollie stomped his feet so loudly in annoyance over one play it could be heard 85 feet away in a noisy MSG.
Brissett, one of the top freshmen in the ACC, capitalized with a dunk that stretched the lead back to double digits.
Brissett and Battle each scored 12 points in the first half to help the Orange lead 40-29.
UConn and Syracuse had regular matchups at Madison Square Garden when they both were in the Big East. The greatest of all their matchups was the 2009 Big East Tournament quarterfinal that Syracuse won 127-117 in six overtimes. MSG played clips from the classic on the big screen. Syracuse leads the all-time series 56-38.
