PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Five American Athletic Conference soccer players received CoSIDA Academic All-America® honors, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America on Thursday.
Temple senior Joonas Jokinen (Second Team) and SMU sophomore Phillip Ponder (Third Team) were named to the 2017 Academic All-America® Men’s Soccer Division I Team. Memphis senior Sydney Kingston (Second Team), Cincinnati senior Vanessa Gilles (Third Team) and Houston graduate student Hannah Dauzat (Third Team) were each named to the 2017 Academic All-America® Women’s Soccer Division I Team.
Twenty-six of the 34 members of the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I men’s soccer teams have at least a 3.90 GPA, with 15 student-athletes sporting a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Thirty of the 33 members of the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I women’s soccer teams have at least a 3.90 GPA, with 19 student-athletes sporting a perfect 4.0 GPA.
The five selections are the largest number of CoSIDA Academic All-America® soccer honors in the history of the league. Three players previously received honors since the league was formed in 2013 (Mark Sherrod, Louisville, 2013; Quinn Starker, Tulsa, 2014; Emily Armstrong, UConn, 2016).
