HOUSTON – Cincinnati’s Jacqueline Keire and SMU’s Jonathan Gomez set meet records on Day 2 of the 2017 American Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at the Campus & Wellness Recreation Center Natatorium on the campus of the University of Houston.
Keire swam her way into The American record books in the women’s 50-yard freestyle. The native of Ontario earned gold in the event for the second consecutive year with a record time of 22.19. Keire finished her day by anchoring the Bearcats’ come-from-behind win in the women’s 200-yard freestyle relay. She swam the final leg over half a second faster (21.63) than her meet-record time in the 50 free to lead the squad of Lindsey Niehaus, Michaela Wheeler and Katie Gob to the win.
In the 500-yard freestyle, Gomez established a meet record with a time of 4:17.68, surpassing the previous meet mark of 4:18.23 set by teammate Christian Scherubl in 2015. On the women’s side, UConn’s Emma Smith (4:44.34) edged East Carolina’s Marion Abert (4:44.73) to earn 20 points for the Pirates.
SMU junior Bryce Klein completed his sweep on the springboards with a first-place performance in the men’s 1-meter diving event. After setting the meet record in the 3-meter yesterday, Klein tallied a score of 377.35 for his second gold of the championship. Second place went to East Carolina’s Zachary Duvall (310.25) and third to Daniel Kinney of UConn (297.45).
For the second consecutive year, the gold medal in the men’s 200-yard individual medley went to East Carolina’s Fran Krznaric. The senior covered the distance over two-seconds faster than the rest of the field in the win. Houston freshman Laura Laderoute earned gold in a close women’s 200 IM. Laderoute (2:00.02) touched the wall just before Cincinnati’s Samantha Wheatley (2:0042.) to earn the top-spot for the Cougars.
The SMU men’s 200-yard freestyle relay team repeated with a first-place time of 1:20.16 as the team of Ralph Koo, Nick Badsky, Ziga Cerkovnik and Christian Scherubl earned 40 points for the Mustangs.
John Myhre of East Carolina finished atop the podium in the men’s 50 free with a first-place time of 20.11. UConn’s James Donlevy was runner-up, followed by SMU’s Ziga Cerkovnik with the bronze.
The four-team men’s field is led by East Carolina with 327 points after the second day of events, followed by Cincinnati (292), UConn (267) and SMU (267).
Cincinnati holds first place in the six-team women’s competition with 235 points, followed by Houston (231), SMU (213), East Carolina (192), UConn (187) and Tulane (131).
