The New England Patriots made history in Super Bowl LI, turning in a remarkable come-from-behind victory against the Atlanta Falcons.
For the Patriots, who practiced at the University of Houston in the week leading up to the game, it was a homecoming of sorts for linebacker Elandon Roberts, who was a first-team American Athletic Conference selection in 2015 with the Cougars and a key part of Houston's Peach Bowl championship team.
Roberts had two tackles in the Super Bowl against Atlanta, becoming the third player to have played in The American to earn a Super Bowl ring, joining former Tulane standouts Lorenzo Doss and Taurean Nixon, who were members of the Denver Broncos' 2015 Super Bowl championship team.
Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski, who played collegiately at Memphis, had two field goals New England mounted its comeback. Former Navy center Joe Cardona contributed as the Patriots' long snapper on seven plays.
Former Houston offensive tackle Sebastian Vollmer was on the Patriots' physically unable to perform list.
For Atlanta, former East Carolina wide receiver Justin Hardy had 17 yards on two kickoff returns against the Patriots and was involved in 26 plays on offense and special teams. Wide receiver Aldrick Robinson, formerly of SMU, was involved in 10 offensive plays. Two former UConn standouts, wide receiver Nick Williams and cornerback Blidi Wreh-Wilson, were on the inactive list for the Super Bowl, while former UCF defensive back Kemal Ishmael was on the injured reserve. The Falcons also had former USF quarterback B.J. Daniels and former Memphis defensive end Martin Ifedi on the practice squad.
