Ojeleye Earns Academic All-District Honors

SMU junior Semi Ojeleye was named to the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA) Academic All-District™ Seven Men’s Basketball Team, the organization announced today. The eight district teams recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.

Ojeleye, who had not played collegiate basketball in nearly two seasons, is third in The American, averaging 17.7 points to go along with 6.7 rebounds per game. One of the top forwards in the conference, Ojeleye is connecting on 41-percent of his three-point field-goal attempts, good for fifth in The American. Ojeleye was named the American Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week on Nov. 14, and has been named to the Weekly Honor Roll five times (Nov. 21, Dec. 12, Dec. 26, Jan. 2, Jan. 9).

The play of Ojeleye has been one of the key reasons for SMU's strong play this season. Winners of 16 of their last 17 games, the Ponies are ranked 25th in the Associated Press poll and are on the verge of cracking the USA Today/Coaches poll top 25.

Off the court, Ojeleye holds a 3.65 grade-point average at SMU, majoring in Psychology.

First-team Academic All-District™  honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America® honorees will be selected later this month.

This is the sixth year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division Academic All-America® Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
