Annette Echikunwoke Wins Gold at NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships



College Station, Texas - Cincinnati’s Annette Echikunwoke became the first athlete in American Athletic Conference history to win an event at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Echikunwoke won the women’s weight throw with a distance of 22.42m. The American conference champion’s first attempt was enough to win her gold by a distance of 0.68m over Dolly Nyemah of Louisville. Echikunwoke is also the first Bearcat to ever win gold at the NCAA Championships.

Fellow Bearcat Adrian Valles finished fifth in the pole vault with his best jump clearing 5.45m.

Marc Scott from Tulsa had a great meet in his senior season finishing second in the men’s 5,000m run with a time of 13:43.83 and taking third place in the 3,000m, crossing the finish line in 7:57.19.

Houston senior Cameron Burrell took home silver in the men’s 60m dash with a time of 6.54. It was the second-straight second place finish for the Cougar sprinter. Burrell’s teammate Mario Burke took home seventh place in the 60m in a time of 6.66.

Anne-Marie Blaney from UCF finished in eighth place in the women’s 5,000m. The senior posted a school-record time of 15:49.26.
