Sacramento State's Varsity Eight Earns Boat of the Week


 
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Sacramento State varsity eight earned the American Boat of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday.

Opening the spring season on Saturday in fast racing conditions that featured mostly no wind, flat water and a slight current, Sacramento State was able to take home gold in the varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four competitions. That included an impressive time of 6:33.2 over 2,000 meters by the Hornets' varsity eight. Along with Sacramento State, other boats competing at the event were Portland, Humboldt State, UC San Diego, Saint Mary's, Orange Coast College and Mills College. 

Sacramento State will host the Hornet Invitational on Lake Natoma on March 18, welcoming San Diego State, Loyola Marymount, Saint Mary’s and Drexel.
American Rowing Notebook: 
  • San Diego State
    • Opened the season against UCLA and Stanford in Marina Del Rey, Calif, competing in four races.
    • Finished third in all four races, with the varsity eight posting a best time of 6:51.9.
    • The Aztecs will travel to Gold River, Calif., next weekend where they will face Sacramento State on Saturday and Sunday, March 18.
       
  • SMU
    • Won seven of 10 races in season-opening competition against Creighton at White Rock Lake.
    • In the varsity eight race, boat beat Creighton by over 20 seconds with a time of 7:02.85.
       
  • Tulsa
    • Competed over two days at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational on Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn., against Louisville, Notre Dame and West Virginia.
    • Varsity eight went from time of 6:37.93 on Saturday to 6:27.09, earning first-ever win over Notre Dame.
