SMU junior Semi Ojeleye was named to the 2016-17 Academic All-America second team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)..
Ojeleye, who had not played collegiate basketball in nearly two seasons, is third in The American, averaging 18.2 points to go along with 6.7 rebounds per game. One of the top forwards in the conference, Ojeleye is connecting on 41-percent of his three-point field-goal attempts, good for third in The American. Ojeleye was named the American Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week on Nov. 14 and Feb. 13, while being named to the Weekly Honor Roll five times (Nov. 21, Dec. 12, Dec. 26, Jan. 2, Jan. 9).
The play of Ojeleye has been one of the key reasons for SMU's strong play this season. Winners of 21 of their last 22 games, the Ponies are ranked 14th in the Associated Press poll and 19th in the the USA Today/Coaches poll.
Off the court, Ojeleye holds a 3.65 grade-point average at SMU, majoring in Psychology.
This is the sixth year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division Academic All-America® Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
